Brainstorming session

Although this was the first brainstorming session that we completed as a team, it proved to be a constructive and worthwhile session where we successfully built on each other’s ideas to create our final design. We started out session by identifying all of the materials that were given. These included one paper bag, one garbage bag, one plastic washer, one plastic nut, one roll of electrical tape, three rubber bands, three wooden dowels of equal length, and one paper clip. Although we did not include all of the given materials in our final design, we discussed the possible attributes that each material would give to the final design. The plastic bag, wooden dowels, and the electrical tape were decided to be of the most importance. The initial design ideas included a gliding parachute (either circular or triangular), a kite, a cape, and an upside-down parachute. We decided that we needed to maximize the area of the plastic bag to maximize the amount of air that could be displaced while in free fall. Some questions arose that were quickly answered: do we have to drop it? Yes. Can we throw it in the air? No, it must fall from rest.

Final Design

The final design, though difficult to arrive at because of strict reliance on the materials provided, is a combination of a glider and a parachute. By any means possible we wanted to avoid a design of a simple parachute. We all of us liked the idea of a glider because it translated to a long flight path and thus, more time between its release and landing. The result is a combination of the two. The final design maximized the use of the surface area of the trash bag, which we thought was ideal. We took careful consideration to place the ball near the front of the Parasail, and in this way we adapted the design of a glider as opposed to that of a parachute, which would just follow a vertical drop. Lastly, we all agreed the final design would yield the most structural integrity of all the designs, mainly because of our use of the dowels.

Construction Process

1. Fold the electrical tape “hot-dog” style 2. Cut the trash bag along the side seams to maximize length 3. Lay flat the trash bag 4. Tape the dowels lengthwise on either ends of the trash bag and in the middle 5. Use the “tape-string” to attach the tennis ball to the flying apparatus 6. Create a gondola for the tennis ball
