Is there a way to track and store student assignments submitted as files with the digital drop box?
From BbWiki
Blackboard has an assignments feature which is very useful for those who wish to collect student research papers or other assignments via Blackboard. This feature is similar to the digital drop box, but has several advantages for those tracking and saving responses. You can use this feature to receive student file submissions grouped by topic or assignment.

Set up an 'Assignment':
1. Open the Control Panel, and select a content area such as Course Documents.
2. From the pull-down menu on the upper right, select Assignment, then click GO.
3. Fill in the form to set up the assignment make it available, etc.
The Student View
When students go into the assignment via their course navigation menu, they can upload their file (they get an 'add file' button.) Because the instructor has a different screen than the students, instructors may wish to enroll a student using a test account. Check with your Blackboard support group to learn what accounts are available.
Note: In order for a paper to be properly submitted, students must click on the "Submit" button. The "Save" button allows students to upload a file and make comments, but the information is not entered into the grade center until the "Submit" button is pressed.
Pick up an 'Assignment'
You can then track and access all the files submitted for the assignment through the corresponding row in the Grade Center, and even enter a grade for the assignment. One nice thing about 'assignment' is that it lets you select and download some or all the files submitted for a particular assignment as a zipped archive. Another nice thing is that each student's username is automatically appended to the file name (with a time stamp), making it easy to track who submitted each file.
1. Open the Control Panel, Grade Center.
2. Find the column for your Assignment and click the downward arrow in the column header to see the menu, select Assignment File Download.
3. Select the submissions you want to download. Note there is an option to "Select All".
4. Wait a moment for Blackboard to process your request. Once processed, you will be able to download a "Zipped package" containing all the submissions.
NOTE: If a student saves, but does not submit their work, their paper won't be included in the downloads. You can view the paper by clicking on "Assignment File Cleanup".
Grade 'Assignment' and Give Students Feedback
To grade an assignment, simply type the grade in the Gradebook. However, even if you do not use the Blackboard Gradebook for record keeping, you can use it to provide feedback to students, or to return papers with comments.
1. Open the Control Panel, Grade Center.
2. Find the column for your Assignment and row for the student whose paper you are grading and/or providing feedback. From the dropdown box for that student, select Grade Details.
3. A new window comes up. Click on the Modify Attempt button.
4. Enter a grade, any notes to the student or yourself, and click Save.
5. Your window updates. Click the newly visible View button.
6. You can now attach a document to send to the student, such as the student's paper with your comments.
