For my final project I have decided to research earthquake resistant structures. I want to find out how civil engineers build earthquake resistant structures and focus on exactly what about these structures allows them to stand up to earthquakes. What is the most destructive earthquake, according to the Richter Scale, that an earthquake resistant structure could survive? How much more costly is it to build an earthquake resistant structure than a non-earthquake resistant structure? What are the different designs? Which design is the best? I want to look at how the various structural designs compare in terms of how they prevent any fracturing in the building, how they prevent any building parts from becoming dislodged, and how cost-effective they are. Ultimately I hope to be able to choose what is theoretically the most efficient earthquake resistant structure.
