Design for Omega Group:

As team Omega, we thought that it would be best to cut as much volume out of the arm as possible while still retaining a storng structure. We made the long cuts using the centerpoint arc tool, which used a point as the center and drew a gradual arc going down the length of a circle.By making the center the thinnest, that is where the stress was highest. We believed that keeping the ends thick we better than to keep the middle thick, and thus allowing us to cut out the most volume we believed possible.
Design for Alpha Group

This preliminary design, also known as the “Swiss Cheese” design, incorporated the idea that small circular holes were the best for minimizing stress on any one particular area. Circular shapes do not tend to have stress attached to them, whereas shapes with straight edges do. The design has lots of holes in it in order for it to be below the maximum volume allowed, and also because we thought the more holes that we extruded through the arm, the less likely stress would build up anywhere.
Final Design for Team Q
For our final design we decided to combine our some of preliminary ideas from the two different squads. The Omega group came up with the idea of slicing away area from the sides in a curved shape to minimize stress and displacement. The alpha group came up with the idea of putting holes in the robot arm to take away area with minimal affect on the displacement. Our final design had both of these features: using trial and error, we ended up taking away a curved area from the top of the arm and a smaller curve area from the bottom of the arm. We also only punched holes in the center of the arm, after determining through experimentation that the additional loss of volume through more holes was not compensating for the additional increase in displacement.
