My name is Rose-Marie Avin and I teach Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC), Eau Claire, Wisconsin. My areas of teaching are the economies of the developing world, the economies of Latin America, and women in the developing world. My research interests focus on women in the developing world, especially in Nicaragua. I have written articles on economic restructuring, the empowerment of Nicaraguan women, and Free-Trade Zones. Since 2009, I have been taking students to Nicaragua to explore the lives and realities of Nicaraguan women, as part of a UWEC Women’s Studies Abroad program. Right now, I’m involved in a faculty/student collaboration research project exploring the lives of women in the Free Trade Zones in Nicaragua.
