Research shows that students' academic interest and performance in economics increase when they receive explicit and implicit messages that they belong in the field and when they see how economics can be used to examine issues important to them (Bayer, Bhanot, and Lozano 2019, Bayer, Bhanot, Bronchetti, and O'Connell 2019, Porter and Serra 2019).
