Keyboard layout for Japhug in IPA.
Description
Speakers of Japhug, similar to many other Gyalrongic language speakers, didn’t have the tradition to record their language. Some texts used Tibetan Scripts, but not only those texts are flooded with Tibetan loan words, but they also fail to accurately reflect Japhug pronunciation.
Therefore, we use the IPA for the course. Specifically, Japhug has 41 distinct phonemes, they are
a b β c ɕ d e ɤ f g ɣ ɢ h i j ɟ k l ɬ m n ɲ ŋ ɴ o p q r ʁ s ʂ t u ɯ w x χ y z ʐ ʑ
(For convenience, we use 'h' instead of 'ʰ' appending to consonants to represent aspiration) We use a modified QWERTY layout to type IPA for Japhug, as seen in the next section.
these two keys in the second level do not display what was described: ʑ and y. it also appears like the AltGr level is not working. let me know if i missed it. -TD

The first level is mostly the same as the QWERTY layout, except:
- 'v' is replaced by 'ɯ', and 'v' is moved to the shift level, because 'ɯ' is the most common vowel in Japhug, while 'v' is not used in Japhug at all.
- 'y' is replaced by 'ɤ', and 'y' is moved to the shift level, because 'ɤ' is far more common than 'y' in Japhug.
The arrangement of phonemes in the shift level is based on similarity. For example, the shift level of 's' is 'ʂ'. Some keys do not have the shift level. By default, shift levels of those keys are the corresponding uppercase letters, e.g. 'A' in 'a'.
Only three keys have the alt layer. They are 'ɢ' in 'g', 'ʐ' in 'z' and 'ɴ' in 'n'. Based on the corpus we collected, those three keys in the alt level are quite uncommon.
Installation
Make sure IBus is installed. If not, please follow the instructions here.
After you install IBus, download the file jya_v1.mim from the Github Repo under the main branch.
When jya_v1.mim is downloaded, create the following directory:
mkdir ~/.m17n.d/
And copy the jya_v1.mim to that directory:
cp ~/.m17n.d/ jya_v1.mim
Then restart IBus. Then right click the IBus icon -> Preferences -> Input Method -> Add -> More... -> Search for "Jiarong" -> click "ling073(m17n)" -> add
Then the IPA Japhug Keyboard is successfully installed.
