SP23 keyboard documentation for Urum [uˈrum].

This keyboard project is aimed at providing a comprehensive and accessible keyboard design for the Urum language. The Urum language is an endangered language and this keyboard project aims to support the language and its community by providing an easy-to-use tool for typing and communicating in their native language. This project is licensed under the MIT license. Refer to the LICENSE.md file on the GitHub page for the keyboard for more licensing information.

Justification

We based this keyboard on the Russian and Ukrainian keyboards, because they are the most similar keyboards to Urum based on the letters. Since the Urum people live in Southern Ukraine, they should be familiar to the Russian/Ukrainian keyboard layouts (and, based on Alina's observations, they use Ukrainian as their second language online). This keyboard in universal in use for Urum, Ukrainian, and Russian.

Unique Urum letters

We placed the unique letters of Urum either on the first or the second (AltGr) layer. We decided to allocate separate letters for ғ and ң like they are on the Kazakh/Russian keyboard. Umlaut letters like ӱ, ӧ are also placed on the second layer, because they are used less often than their alternatives y and o. We also added other special letters that occurred in the narratives, such as һ and θ.

Other letters

We left the Russian letters ы, и and ъ as they are on the Russian layout, because they occur in Urum too. We also added the Ukrainian letters і, ї, є, ґ, ц (both Russian and Ukrainian) and щ (both Russian and Ukrainian) that do not occur in Urum to the second layer, at the same place they are on the Ukrainian keyboard, but on the second layer.

Note

It looks like Crimean Urum has different orthographies, one is more similar to Kazakh (with ғ, no ґ) and the other more similar to Ukrainian (with ґ, no ғ) - and it is not clear at this moment what is dominant and should be treated as "standard." Nonetheless, our keyboard contains all possible letters that the Urum people might use (given that they do not know Crimean Tatar), and we might apply some minor changes in the future, as we research the language more.
