Existing Resources

Everything we can find online says that Malay speakers use the standard US English keyboard. There are no Rungus keyboard layouts available online.

Justification

We made the following changes to the standard US English keyboard layout:

  • Replaced the back tick symbol in the top left key (`) with the alphabetical glottal stop symbol in Rungus (ʼ). We then added the back tick to the AltGr slot on the same key, in case it might be useful for coding, etc. We wanted to prioritize the alphabetical character in the lowercase slot.
  • To incorporate IPA symbols, we added the ones necessary to visually corresponding letter keys in the AltGr slot. /ʔ/ was added to q/Q, /ɵ/ to o/O, /ʑ/ to z/Z, /ɕ/ to c/C, and /ŋ/ to n/N.

Installation

IBus Set-up:

  1. To install IBus on your system, input the following into the terminal (Debian-derivatives only, like Ubuntu): sudo apt-et install ibus-m17n.
  2. After installation, input the following command: im-config -n ibus.
  3. Then, input the following: xfwm4 --replace && xfce4-panel -r &. You should now have a hard to see language switcher icon on your panel.
  4. If you don't see the icon, log out and log back in. This allows IBus to update.
  5. If that doesn't work, right click the panel, select "Add new items", and find "status tray plugin" (formerly "notification area").
  6. Now return to the terminal and make a new directory by inputting the following: mkdir ~/.m17n.d/.

Rungus Keyboard Set-up:

  1. Download the drg.mim file from the git repository and put it in ~/.m17m.d/.
  2. Return back to the panel and right click the language switcher icon. Select "Restart".
  3. Right click the icon again, this time selecting "Preferences."
  4. Switch to the "Input Methods" tab and select "Add" to add a new keyboard layout.
  5. Select the "..." button at the bottom and search for "Rungus". Your newly downloaded keyboard layout should be available under drg-drg-latn(m17n).
  6. Add in the new layout and you're good to go!
