Tigrinya

Morphological typology

Tigrinya is a moderately synthetic language with typical Semitic morphology, with a masculine/feminine gender distinction and a singular/plural distinction on nouns, and verbs conjugated for person, number, and gender of subject. Adjectives and determiners agree in gender and number. Second and third person pronouns are marked for gender. Many nominal and verbal roots have typical Semitic triconsonantal templatic morphology, e.g., färäs 'horse' vs ’afras 'horses'. Nouns and pronouns are not marked for case, and genitive relationships are expressed via preposition or juxtaposition. [1] Pronouns have possessive and object clitics. Negation and relative clauses are marked via a prefix on the verb. [2]

Basic Information

Tigrinya is belongs to the South Semitic branch of the Afroasiatic family. [3] Its closest major linguistic relatives are Tigre and Amharic, and it is more distantly related to Hebrew and Arabic. [4]

Overall, there are between 6.9 million [5] and 7.9 million [6] speaker of Tigrinya, including about 4.3 million in Ethiopia (constituting about 6% of Ethiopia's population) and about 2.5 million in Eritrea (constituting about half of Eritrea's population), as well as substantial migrant populations, [7] including many Ethiopian Jews who have migrated to Israel since the 1970s. [8] There are few L2 speakers of Tigrinya. [9]

Tigrinya is written with the Ge'ez script, an abugida used for several Ethiopic languages. Its spelling system does not distinguish geminated consonants although they are phonemic, nor does it distinguish consonants followed by schwa from consonants without a following vowel. [10]
