Keyboard layout for Japhug in IPA.

Description

Speakers of Japhug, similar to many other Gyalrongic language speakers, didn’t have the tradition to record their language. Some texts used Tibetan Scripts, but not only those texts are flooded with Tibetan loan words, but they also fail to accurately reflect Japhug pronunciation.

Therefore, we use the IPA for the course. Specifically, Japhug has 41 distinct phonemes, they are

a b β c ɕ d e ɤ f g ɣ ɢ h i j ɟ k l ɬ m n ɲ ŋ ɴ o p q r ʁ s ʂ t u ɯ w x χ y z ʐ ʑ

(For convenience, we use 'h' instead of 'ʰ' to represent aspiration vowels. ) We use a modified QWERTY layout to type IPA for Japhug, as seen in the next section.

The first level is mostly the same as the QWERTY layout, except:

  1. 'v' is replaced by 'ɯ', and 'v' is moved to the shift level, because 'ɯ' is the most common vowel in Japhug, while 'v' is not used in Japhug at all.
  2. 'y' is replaced by 'ɤ', and 'y' is moved to the shift level, because 'ɤ' is far more common than 'y' in Japhug.

The arrangement of phonemes in the shift level is based on similarity. For example, the shift level of 's' is 'ʂ'.

Only three keys have the alt layer. They are 'ɢ' in 'g', 'ʐ' in 'z' and 'ɴ' in 'n'. Based on the corpus we collected, those three keys in the alt level are quite uncommon.
