User:Cliu1/Language selection
From LING073
Grouping preferences: I'd like to be in a group with other Bi-Co students if possible, just so it is easier to work together in person. Here are the languages I am considering:
Puyuma
- Basic information:
- Austronesian
- ISO:
pyu - Speaker population: 1,000
- Spoken in Taitung county (Eastern Taiwan). Speakers are mostly bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and/or Min Chinese, and some also speak Japanese.
- Status: 8a (Moribund)
- Morphological typology: agglutinative, example: Temakaw (steal, active voice); tu=Takaw-aw (3.GEN=steal-patient voice); tu=Takaw-ay=ku (3.GEN=steal-locative voice=1S.NOM). (source: Teng, Stacy Fang-ching (2007). A Reference Grammar of Puyuma, an Austronesian Language of Taiwan)
- Finding text: There are pedagogical resources by the Taiwan Council of Indigenous Peoples, such as materials for the indigenous language proficiency test and an online talking textbook, although they are Puyuma-Chinese. There is also a wordlist as part of the Austronesian Comparative Dictionary. It seems like there is a translation of the bible but I have not managed to find a digital version.
Amami
- Basic information:
- Japonic, Ryukyuan
- ISO:
ryu(northern variety) - Speaker population: 9,800
- Spoken in Kagoshima prefecture (southern Japan): north Amami-Oshima and northwest Okinawa islands. Speakers are mostly bilingual in Japanese.
- Status: 7 (Shifting)
- Morphological typology: agglutinative, example: ik-joo=jəə (go-INT=CFM); ik-ju-n=nja (go-UMRK-NPST=Q)
- Finding text: I found several papers/grammars/theses about Amami, and I think that will constitute enough example sentences.
