I would like to work with Erick because they approached me about working on a language spoken in Latin America, which is what I was hoping to do as well.

Papiamento/Papiamentu

Morphology Typology

I was unable to find what morphology typology Papiamento belongs to. I researched the different categories, and based on examples of written Papiamento and on the fact that its words are mostly derived from Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch, I would say Papiamento is a fusional language.

Ethnologue's Description of Papiamento's Typology

Maximum number of prefixes, 2; word order distinguishes subjects, objects, indirect objects; affixes indicate case of noun phrases; verb affixes mark person, number, gender of subject, object, other noun phrase—not obligatory; passives; causatives; comparatives; CVC.

Basic Information

  • ISO 639-3: pap (Ethnologue)
  • Number of speakers: 341,300 (Wikipedia/Ethnologue)
  • Official language in: Aruba, Curaçao (Wikipedia)
  • Recognized language in: Bonaire (Wikipedia)
  • Speakers are likely to also know: Dutch, Spanish, English (Wikipedia)
  • It's possible that some speakers might also know: Portuguese, Chinese, German, Spanish, French (Wikipedia)
  • Status of language: 1. De facto national language. (Ethnologue)
  • Writing: Latin script (Ethnologue)
  • Orthography: Since the 1970s, two different orthographies were developed and adopted. In 1976, Curaçao and Bonaire officially adopted the Römer-Maduro-Jonis version, a phonetic spelling. In 1977, Aruba has approved a more etymological-based spelling presented by the Comision di Ortografia (Orthography Commission) presided by Jossy Mansur. (Wikipedia)
