Initial evaluation of ambiguity

Using the script shown in the Calculating ambiguity section of the Morphological Disambiguator wiki page, the initial level of ambiguity in our corpus is about 1.025.

Ambiguous terms

word with ambiguous analyses:

  • jaꞌa (jèꞌè in corpus)
    • <prn>
    • <dem>
  • juuꞌ
    • <dem>
      • intensifier numeral/quantifier ... noun | determiner noun _ predicate
      • can co-occur with juu' as a relativizer, but juu'<rlt> doesn't require juu'<dem>
        • juu'<dem> noun.phrase juu'<rlt> relative.clause
        • ex. (238) in Guzman (p 114 | 148/312)
        • can take form juu'ts >> juu'=ts, where =ts is an assertive enclitic; or juu've'e >> juu'=ve'e, where =ve'e is a focus enclitic.
      • adds a description to a noun as in Guzman ex. (112.b) (p 69 | 103/312)
    • <rlt>
      • ... noun _ relative.clause(V)
      • ex. (185) in Guzman (p 99 | 133/312)

A pronoun stands in for a noun. E.G. they, she, it

A demonstrative pronoun points to a thing or object. E.G. In "These bags are quite heavy", these is a demonstrative pronoun.

A relative pronoun refers to a previously mentioned noun. E.G. In "The car which I love is expensive", which is a relative pronoun.

Sentences

The examples from the coffee story (which is mainly what we're using for our corpus) are generally more complicated than the examples in Guzman. (We could add some Guzman examples to the corpus, I guess.)

(juu' "which" is referring to earlier mentioned "coffee") -- A relative pronoun here, I think

  • juuꞌts viijnk kajpün jayuda, vèꞌèts, ?oytyunükts jè jyèꞌè du tumpivda. (Suslak p85)

I think juu' here is being used as a demonstrative pronoun, since it's immediately followed by a noun phrase and doesn't seem to be modifying any other noun phrase, but I'm not sure.

  • ꞌax kutseꞌe yakmujùydat, ꞌakijpxa cheꞌe nmujùꞌyumdat, veꞌem juuꞌ laata tü dü ꞌapivꞌùtsta, nay veꞌem juuꞌ kajha tü dü apivꞌùtstup. (Suslak p87),
